Ironman South Africa Race Report

I have wanted to write this report for a while. I had such an amazing experience at Ironman South Africa. My training had gone well this winter and I felt ready and excited to race. After a long journey, 40 hours of travelling and no sleep I was exhausted and battled all week with low energy. My hard efforts were lame and this was more how I feel before my taper than after 2 weeks of taking it easy. I complained a few times right up until the day before the race to my sister and mom, who had come out to support me, that I was not recovered yet. But the energy in Port Elizabeth was high as the little town started to fill up with athletes and I could not wait to race!
As I sat at the press conference I eyed out the competition. Bella Bayliss was back. She had won 6 Ironman last year and teammate Lucie Zelenkova had come second in IMSA. Also there were a few top 5 finishes from the year before. Andrea Brede who had won the European Long Course Championships was also there. It was going to be tough as always!
Race morning was spectacular. Everything went smoothly and I was so calm.
On the start line I took it all in and felt very happy to be racing at home again. I ran out hard as the cannon went off and was happy to be keeping pace with Bella. She too was getting crushed by the age groupers that started a few yards behind us and swam over us like we weren't even there. By the turnaround I had lost her but kept looking for people's feet to swim on. I was thrilled to come out of the water in 28 minutes for the first loop. This could be my sub 1 hour swim I thought so I ran hard up the beach and back into the waves. With less people around I knew my second loop was going to be slower. I pushed the whole swim and in my heart I smiled as I knew I had nailed the swim. It was 8 minutes faster than 3 years ago.
The bike felt great. I focused on riding steady and not pushing too hard. This bike course is amazing. I love it. If the winds blow hard as they do in PE this course can be unforgiving. Today was just going to be HOT with a 7 mile/hr wind. By the second lap I was using half my drinking water for keeping my body cool. By the third lap my stomach was shutting down and the concentrated calories were not going down. I tried to keep drinking water though otherwise I new I was going to be in trouble. I had great energy on the third lap and I pushed to the finish feeling strong but a little low on calories.
I came off the bike in 5th place and knew I was going to have to run fast.
After the first mile out of transition my legs started to come around and I felt good. The spectators that lined the streets were amazing. Three quarters of this race is flat and has spectators but the one quarter that doesn't is a lonely brutally hot section with a incline and where their is no ocean breeze and no aid stations. I found it was here that I would lose a little momentum. However I still came through the 13 mile mark at 1.35 and knew I was on track for a very good run if I could keep up the effort! I could see the girls getting closer and closer. I was getting good coverage from the helicopter and TV guys so I figured I must be gaining ground so I kept pushing hard. But all of a sudden I hit a wall. My energy was sapped out of my legs and my stomach started cramping. I had to slow my pace down and focus on getting liquids and breathing. At this time of day it had to be well into the 90's and for the first time I was feeling the effects of dehydration. I figured if I could keep getting plenty of coke and water in me I could recover. This is what happened and I managed to finish the last 10 km feeling stronger but on very heavy legs.
Seeing my family there on the course every out and back kept me pushing hard and I enjoyed myself tremendously...despite some pain.
As always I was happy to get to the finish line and was thrilled with my PR and 4th place finish.
As I finished the race a storm rolled in and the winds picked up. Lightening was striking over the ocean and the thunder boomed loudly. Later I heard the medical tent had been blown over and they came close to cancelling the rest of the race. They don't call it the windy city for nothing.
This race is truly awesome and I recommend it to everyone! I may have to go back there in 2010!

Eye of the Tiger!

Tomorrow will be two weeks since Ironman and I am ready to get back to training. How do I know this? Well a good sign is when you go on a nice family bike ride and you see a group of cyclists in the distance. All of a sudden everything gets quiet...I start planning my attack. The pace starts to pick up. The gears start to click ...my heart rate controlled but rising. I calculate how fast they are going...I figure it should only take a few minutes to catch them.
"Mom ...I'm thirsty..." oops what am I doing,I'm on a family ride. I look ahead again but I can't let them go...OK here goes...once again I pick up the pace...faster faster... I'm gaining ground...this will work...
Yes, I am on my mountain bike, and I do have my daughters tandem bike attached to mine...but we can do it. I shout to Sydney that I think we can catch the cyclists ahead... pedal faster. She laughs...this is FUN. Wow, mom we are going fast! I know but we can go faster....I push hard...we are so close now...we are going to pass them! Hundred yards back....maybe a minute...
Mom she yells ,"Can we turn around now....I can't even see Tanner anymore! Are u sure I ask? "Yeh, lets go back...she says! I watch as the group pulls away....AHHH, so close....

Kids go back to school Monday and I will have some time to sit and write my IMSA race report. It's been a fun two weeks!

Camp ended and I am back to reality!

I wish I could have kept up with my blog on the camp but I was just so tired at the end of each day that my writing was worthless. I have a dozen half finished blogs that never came into fruition.
To sum it up anyone who has never done a training camp should do one.

These are my suggestions before going to a HTFU camp.

Make sure you arrive having done ALL of your base work otherwise you will spend most of camp suffering big time!

It is really nice to know the people you are training with, so you don't mind making a fool of yourself when you're bent over throwing up because you pushed yourself so hard!

You really have to love your coach otherwise you may want to swear at him by day 5 of camp when he starts giving you second and third main swim sets!

Make sure you don't go to camp underweight as you will be constantly reminded to EAT...EAT ...EAT and by the end of camp you will have gained weight.

Don't go to Tucson if you don't like to climb...you will learn to embrace riding up a hill for 2 hours at a time...slow and steady! Love descending because there's alot of it too!

Have a sense of humour! Be prepared to laugh alot!

Sleep whenever you can so you can survive the week!

Do not be afraid to work hard!

Don't be a whiner! Nobody wants to hear it!

LOVE triathlon as you are going to live it everyday!

This was an epic camp! Tucson was the perfect place and Mount Lemmon was da bomb!
I really felt that the gains from this kind of training are huge and I look forward to seeing the posse have some awesome results!
Thanks Paulo for being our fearful leader and knowing just how much we could all handle without breaking!

One day at a time! Workout by workout!

This is definitely the way to go at camp. My day definitely got better yesterday. Thanks for all the good thoughts. Chipotle was definitely in order and was our first stop after our swim workout. This huge mass calorie consumption made me over full but gave me the boost I needed to get me through my rest of my day.

Swim was tough...tough..tough with a 5100 yard workout. Lots of band, paddles, pulling, hard all out sets and drafting sets....alot of fun. We are all working very hard and putting everything into our workouts. It was fun to see

Later in the day we headed out to Saguaro National Park for a long run. I had a 2 hour zone 2 run to do and everyone else had 1hr30 with some zone 4 intervals. With temps in the high 80's it was hot in the park. Some of the guys turned within the first mile when they saw a rattle snake...I myself kept running and got a solid 1hour in the trails before heading out to the road to do a faster hour on the road.It was so cool running on thr trails with the cacti all around and the mountains closeby. My energy was very good and I felt strong the whole way through.Seeing those guys running towards me doing there zone 4 intervals was very inspiring and they all looked so strong that it pushed me to work harder and nail the workout!
A few pictures from the day.
